When Tony Fernandes launched Asia's first no-frills airline Air Asia in Malaysia in January 2002, few people imagined that in the space of 36 months, over twenty-five new low fare airlines would be spreading their wings in Thailand, Singapore, the Philippines, Indonesia, India and Japan. While sub-Saharan Africa, Latin America and the Middle East are home to only a handful of budget airlines, the region spanning South Asia, Southeast Asia and East Asia has fast developed into the third major low cost airline battleground after Europe and North America.

Low Cost Airlines in the British Isles

There are now nearly thirty no-frills airlines flying domestic and international routes across Asia from Pakistan in the west to Japan in the east. The Asian low cost airline guides in this section provide a detailed overview of all the routes and special offers currently available across the eastern half of the Asian continent. For low cost airlines in the Middle East, see our separate Middle East Low Cost Airlines Guide and for low cost airlines to Russia and Turkey, see the European Low Cost Airlines Guide.

The reference map on this page will take you to the individual no-frills airline guides and you can also browse complete, updated lists of Asan low cost airlines, by country, by airline and by airport.

Independent travellers looking to travel in India in 2005 can look forward to the emergence of a wave of brand new Indian budget airlines which will go into competition with the established Indian no-frills airline, Air Deccan. The new airlines include Air India Express, VJ Mallya's Fly Kingfisher and the new low fares arm of Royal Airways, spiceJet.
