Air Arabia offers direct low fare flights from its base in Sharjah in the United Arab Emirates to both the Kazakh capital, Astana and to the former Kazakh capital, Almaty.

Baltic Low Cost Airline

The Latvian airline Air Baltic is currently the cheapest way of flying one-way to Kazakhstan from most cities in Western Europe - and if you book far enough ahead to secure the lowest available scheduled fares, you can really save some money.

Lowest fares for direct flights from Riga to Almaty start at 99 Lati or €141 including taxes. (If you are looking for low fare flights to the Kazakh capital Astana instead, see KD Avia below.)

Budget Travel Tip: How to secure the cheapest round-trip flights from the UK to Almaty...

If you're planning to fly from the UK to Kazakhstan and then home again, your cheapest strategy at present is to combine two one-way flights on the Latvian low cost carrier Air Baltic. By booking sufficiently in advance, you'll find equivalent round-trip fares from London Gatwick to Almaty for as little as £395 including taxes. Although this requires changing flights in Riga, it's considerably cheaper than the best direct round-trip fare currently offered by bmi. It's also cheaper than flying via Amsterdam on KLM (which offers a £467 return flight from London inc. taxes). And it even costs less than the lowest fare available on Kazakhstan's national carrier, Air Astana, which flies direct to Almaty from London Heathrow and back for £435 including taxes.

UK Low Fare Airline

Regrettably, British Midland International still operates a legacy-airline-style fare system. So if you're after the cheapest flights between the UK and Kazakhstan, you're better off checking out Air Baltic's indirect flights from London Gatwick to Almaty, via Riga in Latvia.

If you want the luxury of flying direct, without a stopover, then bmi's cheapest round-trip flight from London Heathrow to Almaty and back will set you back £520 including taxes. We think bmi could do better than this, but don't hold your breath.

Budget Travel Tip: bmi's cheapest return fare to Almaty can easily be beaten...

It's true that British Midland International offers the lowest return fares of any UK airline flying direct to Kazakhstan. But that's a lot of qualifications. You only need to look a little further to find round-trip fares which beat bmi's best fare of £520 including taxes. Air Astana, the national carrier of Kazakhstan, flies direct from London Heathrow to Almaty and is certainly cheaper. Even other (non-UK) Western European airlines which operate indirect return flights from the UK fly to Kazakhstan more cheaply - KLM, which flies via Amsterdam, springs to mind. Your cheapest option of all is Air Baltic which flies from London Gatwick to Almaty via the Latvian capital.

Kaliningrad Low Cost Airline

While KD Avia is not a dedicated low cost airline - and it's unlikely to become one unless it goes through a fairly extensive internal restructure - we still think it's worth mentioning this airline on the basis of its relatively low one-way fares.

Based out of Khrabrovo airport (KGD) in Russia's Kaliningrad exclave on the Eastern shore of the Baltic between Poland and Lithuania, KD Avia's fares are not as cheap as the best fares offered by Latvian rival Air Baltic - though it does nevertheless operate a reasonably affordable air service to Kazakhstan's capital, Astana, from a number of major European cities.

Note that, just as Air Baltic flies only to Almaty at present, KD Avia flies only to the Kazakh capital, Astana at this point in time.
