We've put together a list of all the low fare airlines currently flying to and from and across Iceland.

Air Berlin

Top-End Low Fares   :   Expect some Frills

Air Berlin is well-known for offering some exceptionally cheap low cost flights between cities on the European continental mainland.

However... we think the German carrier's fares to Iceland leave a little to be desired.

If you want to fly low cost from Germany, Austria or Switzerland to Iceland you do have a few choices and you'd be well advised to look first at the German no-frills airline carrier germanwings, the Icelandic budget airline Iceland Express or even Iceland's flag-carrier, Icelandair, before you snap up one of Air Berlin's fares.

You can see from the map on the right that Air Berlin currently flies direct to Reykjavik from only two airports: Dusseldorf and Munich. Flights from all other cities are routed through one or other of these airports. Normally this means you end up paying a bit more for the extra flying time than you would if you flew direct.

How can I get these cheap flights on Air Berlin?

Air Berlin's booking engine is easy to navigate. You'll find that flights to Iceland (taken on from LTU when it was incorporated into Air Berlin in 2007) are summer season only - from end of May until mid-September. To find the cheapest fares you'll need to book ahead of time either for the beginning or the end of the season.

Air Iceland

Mid-Range Low Fares   :   Expect some Frills

Iceland's domestic airline operates low fare shuttle services across the interior of the country providing quick connections from Reykjavik to Akureyri and to other towns around Iceland's perimeter.

Cheapest one-way fares between Reykjavik and destinations including Akureyri in the north, Isafjörður in the Westfjords or Egilsstaðir in the far northeast start at ISK 3990 or €36 including taxes.

You can also fly internationally on Air Iceland: either west to Greenland or southeast to the Faeroe Islands.

Note that in Reykjavik all domestic and international Air Iceland flights depart from Reykjavik City Airport - save one service to Nuuk in Greenland which departs from Reykjavik Keflavik.

Low-End Low Fares   :   Expect no Frills

The first European no-frills airline to give Iceland Express some real summer season competition, germanwings flies direct to Reykjavik only from Cologne Bonn airport in Western Germany, with fares starting at €73 including taxes.

But germanwings also offers budget flights to Iceland, via Cologne Bonn, from several other cities in Germany as well as from Zurich in Switzerland. Tax-inclusive low fares for these flights start at €93 and CHF 168 respectively.

Note that because germanwings is a dedicated low cost carrier, it offers combined flights in place of conventional connecting flights. This means that on arrival at Cologne Bonn you must go through passport control, before checking in again for your second flight.

Iceland's own budget airline now flies low cost routes not just to the United Kingdom and Denmark but to countries across Scandinavia, Western Europe, the Mediterranean and even to Poland in Central Europe.

In most cases the fares offered by Iceland Express represent by far the cheapest flights to Iceland from cities elsewhere in Europe.

Note however that Icelandair competes hard on routes from the UK and be sure to check germanwings if you are planning to fly to Iceland from Germany or Switzerland in case it has a special fare on offer.

Iceland's legacy flag-carrier Icelandair now offers a handful of low one-way fares to the Icelandic capital Reykjavik. But be warned: securing a low fare on Iceland's flag-carrier is highly contingent on where you are flying from, when you want to fly and how early you book.

As you might expect Icelandair flies more routes than any other airline serving Iceland - including to countries and regions which the Iceland-bound budget airlines do not serve - such as Scotland, Ireland, the North of England and Norway.

But in general Iceland's flag-carrier is not really ready to compete on price with Europe's dedicated low cost airlines and so its fares are rarely in the same league as those offered by germanwings and Iceland Express.
