Cheap Flights to the Czech Republic on Low Cost Airlines

Belgium's re-invented flag-carrier, formed from the merger of SN Brussels and Virgin Express, now offers flights from Brussels to Prague for a fixed cheapest one-way fare of €50 including taxes.

Started in late 2007, Click 4 Sky is the low fare subsidiary of the Czech flag carrier CSA. But it is not (by any means) a conventional airline. It is a virtual low fares brand in the same way that Snowflake is now the SAS Denmark virtual low fares brand and fly thomas cook is a virtual low fares brand which belongs to Thomas Cook.

To you as the passenger this is unlikely to make a difference once you have booked your flight and you're on the plane, but knowing how the concept works will give you an advantage in finding and booking the cheapest flights in the first place.

Basically, the Czech flag-carrier, CSA can reasonably assume that under normal circumstances a few seats in economy class will still be empty when the plane takes off, if all economy seats are sold at normal economy fares. To get around this and maximise the yield from each flight, CSA can offer some seats at deep discounts in order to make sure the flight is as close to maximum capacity as possible (and therefore maximum yield has been achieved) when it takes off. However, by offering the deep-discounted seats under its own name, CSA runs the risk of word spreading and some people always holding out for the cheapest seats or else not flying with CSA at all - which leaves the Czech flag-carrier in a worse position than it was in before.

The solution, therefore, is to offer the deep-discounted seats under a new "virtual" brand which might attract passengers on tighter budgets who are more flexible in their travel plans and do not have the same a la carte expectations as traditional CSA passengers might do. On the one hand this allows CSA to carry on selling seats at normal economy fares, giving no indication that there are any deep-discounted seats available at all. On the other, it gives Click 4 Sky the freedom to set its own booking conditions, seat availability and fares without compromising whatever image CSA has spent millions of Koruna cultivating.

• A strictly limited number of available seats on every flight - so you have to be lucky, if you need something specific;
• No one-way flights allowed - only round-trip fares available;
• Tax-inclusive fixed fares at either a lower rate of £58 / €78 or else a higher rate of £98 / €138 on every round-trip flight;
• a simple web-based booking engine - and once you're on board, you'll never know that you didn't book with CSA.

The Barcelona based low cost subsidiary of Iberia offers low fare flights to the Czech capital for as little as €59 including taxes from Barcelona to Prague; and €73 including taxes from Prague to Barcelona.

As with an increasing number of low cost airlines, clickair also now let you book a pair of combined flights in one go. The timetable allows for combined flights from Prague to three more cities in Spain, to the Canary Islands and to the Russian capital.

But be warned that the cost of a pair of flights on clickair can quickly add up. We found the cheapest one-way flight from Prague to Las Palmas on Gran Canaria came out to €126 including taxes, which is not bad, but pushing the limits of what we would strictly describe as a "low fare".

Norwegian

Norwegian is the only European low fare airline to fly to Prague from airports in Norway. The carrier operates direct flights to the Czech Republic from four cities in southern Norway and offers combined flights to Prague, via Oslo, from a further four Norwegian cities.

To give you a taste of what's available: direct fares from Oslo to Prague start at NOK 416 or €52 including taxes, while combined fares from Tromsø to Prague start at NOK 919 or €115 including taxes.

Snowflake

Once a dedicated low cost airline in its own right, Snowflake is now just a virtual low cost airline representing the lowest fares of SAS Denmark economy class.

You'll find low fare flights from Copenhagen Kastrup to Prague Ruzyne for as little as DKK 532 or €72 including taxes. But you'll probably save some money if you check Sterling first.
