In 2008, Air Baltic is still the only low fare airline serving Baku on the Caspian Sea. But it now flies not only directly between the Azerbaijan capital and Riga in Latvia, but also to Baku via Riga from more than twenty destinations across Europe, the former Soviet Union and the Eastern Mediterranean (including Turkey and Israel).

Fares for the direct flights are competitive. At present, you can find one-way flights from Riga to Baku for as little as 50 Lati - equivalent to €72 - including taxes.

UK Low Fare Airline

Amongst all UK-based long-haul airlines, bmi has the cheapest, direct, round-trip flights from London to Azerbaijan's capital, Baku, on the Caspian Sea. But don't rush and buy your flights just yet.

If you want to fly return and you want to save as much money as possible we would recommend instead that you fly with Air Baltic (see above) which has a lowest round-trip fare of £275 including taxes - though this will require an overnight stopover in Riga.

If you need to fly direct, then you might try Azerbaijan Hava Yollari which offers direct return flights from London to Baku and back for £400 including taxes.

Finally, you can still opt to fly with bmi which also operates direct, round-trip flights from London to Baku and home again, this time for £692 including taxes. Ouch. Yes, it really is that expensive.
